Rwandan Diplomat Goes Missing In Geneva

Counselor Alphonse Kayitayire is missing
A senior diplomat at the Rwandan Embassy in Geneva, Switzerland, has gone missing, Chimpreports authoritatively reveals.

First Counselor Alphonse Kayitayire had been recalled to Rwanda on December 6 2012 but the date was postponed to January 31 2013 for “professional reasons.”

The office of the Government Spokesperson (OGS) confirmed to this investigative website that the diplomat is no longer part of their staff in Geneva.

Carine Rutari Mwiseneza, an official in the OGS told this reporter in email that “on January 10, Kayitayire sent his office and apartment keys to the Embassy of Rwanda in Geneva,” adding, “from that day he is out of reach.”

It remains unclear why government had asked Kayitayire to return to Kigali.

According to a letter dated January 14, the embassy of Rwanda in Geneva officially announced Kayitayire “doesn't any more act as a Rwanda Diplomat.”

The incident has raised fears that the fugitive Embassy official could be hiding from the long arm of the law after misbehaving in the foreign country.

President Paul Kagame is a renowned disciplinarian, an attribute that has cost him close friends in his attempts to hold all government officials, irrespective of their rank, accountable to the public.

In 2010, the Ambassador to India, Gen Kayumba Nyamwasa fled Rwanda, where he had come for a holiday; after word went around that he would be held accountable for reported abuse of office and engaging in subversive activities. Kayumba denies the charges.

Mrs Soline Nyirahabimana is Rwanda’s ambassador to Geneva.
